— Spreading the spirit of clean rivers for a sustainable city —
Jakarta, 29 November 2025 — Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih (GCB) once again held the 2025 Ciliwung Day, themed “Revitalisasi Ciliwung: Sungai Bersih, Kota Berkelanjutan.” This year, Indofood continued its support as GCB’s strategic partner to strengthen collective efforts in raising public awareness about the conservation of the Ciliwung River, an iconic waterway that serves as a vital lifeline for Jakarta.
The main event took place at the Secretariat Office of Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih in Penjernihan, Karet Tengsin, Central Jakarta, situated at the riverbank of Ciliwung. The event featured a range of activities, including upcycling workshop, river-themed coloring sessions for children, environmental talk show, tree-planting activities along the riverbank, and a Ciliwung exploration & clean-up. These activities were designed to raise awareness, strengthen & inspire collective action toward river conservation, especially among the younger generation.
GCB Chair, Ir. Peni Santoso Dipl. Est, emphasized that Ciliwung Day serves as a key reminder of the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in restoring Ciliwung River ecosystem. “This celebration is not merely ceremonial but an effort to strengthen synergy so that Ciliwung can become cleaner, healthier, more beautiful, and more beneficial to the community. We want Ciliwung to become a space for education, recreation, and intergenerational collaboration,” she said.
Over the years, Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih has implemented various river revitalization and community-based waste-management programs, including Tempat Olah Sampah Setempat (TOSS) and Sekolah Sungai, which serve as pillars for environmental education and community empowerment. Between 2020 and 2025, more than 26,902 kg of waste from the Ciliwung River has been collected, processed and recycled into pellets used fuel.
“Driving Collective Action for a Sustainable City”
The Ciliwung River plays a vital role as a natural ecosystem, water infiltration zone, community learning and recreational space, and a key buffer for flood mitigation. Declining river quality directly increases flood risks and reduces biodiversity. Conversely, sustainable river revitalization supports the restoration of ecological functions and contributes to the development of a cleaner, safer, and more resilient city.
Head of Corporate Communications Indofood, Stefanus Indrayana, stated: “Indofood remains committed to supporting environmental quality improvements, including promoting sustainable river revitalization initiatives. We believe that river preservation is an essential part of improving community quality of life. We are proud to continue our collaboration with GCB through innovative waste-management initiatives and community education programs that help create a clean and healthy Ciliwung ecosystem.”
One of Indofood’s key contributions to community education is increasing awareness of circular-economy-based waste management. All open areas at the GCB Secretariat Office now use eco-friendly paving blocks produced through Indofood’s collaboration with Rebricks. These paving blocks are made from at least 1.3 tons of processed packaging waste.
As part of Ciliwung Day 2025, GCB organized a series of activities including river clean-up, rubber-boat river tour from the GCB Office Pier to UPK Badan Air (±2 km), tree-planting actions, talk show on river revitalization, the “Lensa Ciliwung” photo exhibition showcasing the river through the lens of community activists, creative recycling workshop, and a children’s coloring competition titled “Sungai Ciliwung Sahabat Alamku,” aimed at introducing river ecosystems and environmental values from an early age.
This year’s event was further elevated by the participation of the Abang None Jakarta 2025 finalists, who encouraged young people to take part in river stewardship and sustainable lifestyle initiatives. “We hope that the 2025 Ciliwung Day momentum continues to strengthen synergies among all stakeholders so that the Ciliwung River, our shared heritage, can continue providing benefits for the people of Jakarta, today and in the future,” Peni concluded.
